Tour of the National Solar Thermal Test Facility (NSTTF) at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque

Two tours of the Sandia NSTTF are being planned and Sandia Labs has given approval for these tours to proceed. Sandia Labs is a U.S. Federal Facility and is located on a U.S. Air Force Base, accordingly, visitors for these tours will need to plan early. The following pre-registration is required for every visitor to one of the NSTTF tours. This pre-registration is used to conduct a background check for visitors to a U.S. Federal Facility. Only those conference attendees that complete the pre-registration and obtain approval will be able to register for the tours later.

We can only process tour pre-registration requests up to the end of May 2020. Approvals will be handled on a first-come-first-serve basis and as we have limited space on the NSTTF tours, we highly encourage you to submit your pre-registration information as soon as possible. Final tour registration will start from about May 2020.

More about the NSTTF tours

CSP R&D has been ongoing at Sandia Labs in Albuquerque and Livermore, California, since around 1970-1971. The U.S. Department of Energy selected Sandia’s Albuquerque site to host the National Solar Thermal Test Facility. Construction began around 1976 and the NSTTF was officially opened in 1978. For over 40 years, the NSTTF has been a pioneer and leading facility in the advancement of CSP technology worldwide. Current CSP R&D includes testing of solar integrated supercritical CO2 cycles, high temperature falling particle and liquid receivers and storage, and autonomous collector technologies.

More about the NSTTF here:

One of the NSTTF tours may include participation in the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the biggest hot air balloon event in the world. Visitors to the conference may also choose to visit the Balloon Fiesta on their own. More on the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

Tour of the Solana Generating Station

The Solana Generating Station is one of the single largest CSP plants in the world and at time of commissioning, was the biggest single parabolic trough plant at 280 MW gross. The plant is south west of Phoenix, Arizona, about 500 miles from Albuquerque. The Local Organizing Committee is exploring options to conduct a tour of the Solana plant.
